Little India Treatment : Fish Head Curry

Back in Singapore we always visit Little India for gastronomy treatment. The symptoms quite persistent : missing something that hot and lots spices with a jug of Tiger beer probably. The easiest way to reach Little India is by MRT sometime we catch the bus. Then exit into Race Course Rd. Along that road you’ll find numbers of Indian restaurant, the two are quite famous : Apollo Banana Leaf and Gayatri.

We always regard Indian food in Singapore are more authentic than the one in England. The spices just not there, the taste just blunt. But once you try in Singapore, you’ll never forget. Apollo Banana Leaf is really popular; most of tourist goes there. It may because Lonely Planet recommended it, but also the location just 5 minutes from MRT station. Gayatri tends to be more personal, quite and finest. It’s also famous for Monday and Wednesday Fish Curry Head for SGD$10.

So what is this curry? Indeed this is the original Singapore’s food. When Indian labour flock in to this tiny island, most of them can not afford meat for daily basis. They ended up with fish head chop served with thick curry and vegetables such as okra, eggplant or beans. Most of head came about nearly 1kg still, cooked in very gentle slow process. So yes you will not see the whole head but rather pieces of meat swimming on the yellow sauces. If you want adventure about food, try this before leaving Singapore. Ow… some people challenge you with eating the eye’s ball. Say NO! it’s disgusting….


Both Apollo and Gayatri always serve with Biryani rice and vegetables curry (dals) at banana leaf. Then you ordered the meat as compliments. That day we had Mutton Maysore which is dry mutton meat. Really really spicy. Along with Garlic Naan Bread and pompodoum (crackers). Drink is always lassi (yougurt), we choose mango and salt flavour.

That’s what we missed lots.
